chara_img05_detailOur story this time begins with the heroine finding Ness in some tower on campus, when questioned as to what he’s doing he replies that he’s been fighting with his classmates again and is laying low. He says that the only one he cares about is the heroine. She remarks that he’s changed since they met and he concurs that she has too – she knows that he and everyone else in the school is undead but it doesn’t seem to even bother her. He said that it would be normal to get scared and run away from him. He agrees that the undead do look similar to humans on the outside and goes to say something else but drops the subject. The heroine brings up the upcoming Easter Festival and Ness suddenly remembers that it takes place the following day so asks her to stay over at his house that night. She thinks what he’s saying is weird but Ness reminds her that they’re dating so surely spending the night at her boyfriend’s house isn’t exactly considered strange. He asks if she really doesn’t want to go, even if he asks her to stay. She agrees so he takes her hand and they head home.

At his house, she ends up sitting in the corner which annoys Ness so he pulls her over to him, asking why she’s blushing so much since it’s not her first time over at his house. She replies that it’s because she’s never stayed over before and Ness quips that if she’s going to act like that then she won’t be getting much sleep tonight. He tells her not to worry about the festival tomorrow and proposes that they skip school. He goes onto explain the secret behind the festival – that it is the one day of the year when the undead have a chance to come back to life by stealing the heroine’s heart, aka the “Jewel Heart”. He apologises for not telling her before but it’s one of the school’s top secrets, however since all of the students will be after her he wants her to stay by her side so he can protect her. She says that she’ll be fine going to school, to which he gets angry, reminding her that literally everyone will be trying to kill her. She then replies that she’ll be fine because she’s already given her heart to him. Ness gets flustered,  says that she can be too honest at times and admits that he too wanted to obtain the Jewel Heart and return to being a human but says that he’s changed and wants to live together with the heroine forever so asks her for the Jewel Heart. She replies that it’s his to take and Ness asks if she’s sure before thanking her, telling her he loves her, promising that they’ll find happiness together and finally kissing her…

The CD continues later that night with Ness asking the heroine if she’s still having trouble sleeping; it turns out that she’s curious about how he became undead and he admits that he’s never told anyone that story. He begins by saying that he became undead after trying to kill himself and that before dying and coming to the school he was locked up in his own house for many years. As it turns out, he was abused by his family and at first wondered why he was the only one being treated in that way but as the violence continued numerous times he still loved his family, even if that meant losing his heart and accepting his punishments as they still showed a kinder side by praising his singing. He would wait for his parents to come home every day for many years.

His family’s justification for his punishment was that there was an evil demon inside of him and that being locked away was the only way for him to keep himself safe and that the beatings were his burden to bear. He realises that the “darkness” was just an excuse, their way of justifying their cruelty but could never accept it as such since he wanted to believe that his family did love and care about him. However, on the night of his 17th Birthday, he kills his entire family and tries to kill himself. He believed that they would all move onto another world, one where they could re-do everything and he would be loved by them again. However, he woke up later as a wraith, unable to die and join his family. Once he realised that he would never see his family or be loved again he falls into a deep despair. However, all this changed once he met the heroine – someone who loved him – and decided that he wants to live again as a human by her side. He gets embarrassed and tells her that it’s time to go to bed but agrees that he’ll tell her more of his story another time. He tells her goodnight and kisses her.

The next day, Ness tells the protagonist that her brother Aron recently told him about a kind of black magic that uses the Jewel Heart in order to turn someone back into a human. He says that he’d like to try it out and starts the spell. The room gets enveloped in a dark cloud and after it dissipates, Ness starts acting very strangely and laughs because the heroine is worried about him. He pushes her down and delights in her terrified expression, telling her that she’s now his prey. He asks her if she still doesn’t understand what’s going on and explains that his usual “self” has already disappeared and he’s now become a demon. He reminds her of the story he told her the night before about his past and about the fact he was called a demon by his family. He explains that this wasn’t a lie and that he was born with two different “souls” in his body – the kind Ness she knew and the “demonic” Ness standing before her now.

He continues by saying that normal Ness never noticed but demon Ness had been inside his body from the start. Thanks to Aron telling him a fake spell, demon Ness was able to be freed. The spell Aron taught Ness was not one for turning an undead into a human but was a spell to destroy one’s soul. Ness is delighted that his weaker self has disappeared so he can finally be free. Although he doesn’t know Aron’s reasoning for teaching the wrong spell, he simply doesn’t care. He scoffs and says that he’s sure the other Ness’ soul has disappeared and has absolutely no intentions of returning to how he once was. However, promises to show her a good time and grabs her, saying that since he looks the same on the outside, surely she shouldn’t have a problem? She pushes him away and tries to run, Ness follows after her shouting that there’s no point in running to the school looking for Aron since all of the other students will get her first. She tells him that she intends to find her brother and he tells her good luck because she’ll need it.

The heroine makes it to school and is searching for her brother when she’s surprised by Ness, who asks if she’s found him yet. He explains that it’s super easy to find her since she’s the only one with a heartbeat in this world. He then asks if she knows where she is and she replies that it’s Aron’s room but it appears he’s not at home and Ness then asks why she’s reading a book. He laughs when he realises that she’s searching for a spell to save the other Ness and demon Ness laughs and tells her that an idiot like her has no chance so she’d be better waiting for Aron to return, although he’s probably too busy out looking for her. He asks why she’s so keen for the other Ness to return, although he does remember that he’d promised that they’d find happiness together. He pushes her against the wall and says that he’ll give her until the stroke of midnight to search but when she finds out all of this was for nothing; she should become his for eternity, especially since she’s his prey and he’s more than happy to hunt her.

Fast forward and the heroine is still searching for a spell and Ness laughs over the fact that Aron never came to save her and reminds her that her beloved’s soul has disappeared and will never come back. The clock strikes twelve and Ness says time is up, and as per their bargain, it’s time for her to be his plaything for eternity. He then laughs, saying that he’s sorry that he couldn’t keep his promise to find happiness together…

OH GOODNESS this CD pained me, I made the mistake of listening to the songs first (as per usual) and was dismayed to hear the usual betrayal stuff so had pretty much written off Ness’ CD as filler but it was actually really good? Ness is the only guy so far who hasn’t downright deceived the heroine and I actually cried when it was revealed that the spell erased his soul. Poor Ness, he just wanted to be loved 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

I mean, looking at this CD objectively, the family problems are definitely reminiscent of Diabolik Lovers and him actually killing his family doesn’t exactly make him an angel (although it is probably justified and Ness really only wanted a chance to re-do everything) and the whole “evil twin” type idea isn’t exactly novel but I still really enjoyed this release, even if I never got a happy ending.

I’m a big fan of Ishikawa Kaito anyway but this CD honestly had top-notch voice acting, with the first half being very emotive and Ness playing to the Tsundere/Kuudere trope which is one of Ishikai’s real strengths. However, the second half playing “demonic” Ness is also very well done! It’s been a while since I’ve heard him voice someone so unhinged(?) but he did an outstanding job and the last line was honestly so perfectly delivered!!! His cast commentary is actually the shortest in the series because he just flies through the questions so it wasn’t *quite* as bemusing as the others, sadly 😦

Final Thoughts

My Score: 6.5/10

Well, this is easily my favourite of the Corpse Heart CDs so far and is actually a fairly good drama CD in general. While I wouldn’t recommend this to someone who wants a happy ending, it’s definitely worth a listen for those interested in a more tragic ending and for fans of Ishikawa Kaito who truly delivered here. The songs from this series continue to be pretty good and fans of rejet’s usual style of music will probably enjoy these too~

In terms of the series as a whole, I’m glad that we’re finally getting Aron’s volume next! I’ve had it pre-ordered since the start of November so it’s fair to say I’m pretty hyped! The amount of things they’ve been hinting at with him is really incredible for such a short series and I hope his CD lives up to my (admittedly high) expectations…
After listening to Ness’ volume I really want a sequel with happier endings so hopefully something gets announced at rejet’s January event or at the special Corpse Heart talk event in Feburary (although that’s only going to last like 30 min so there’s probably not enough time to announce much). I’m quite amazed at how strangely attached I feel to this series, even though I think half of the CDs are kinda “meh”.

Thanks for reading!

Thank you for reviewing Ness’s CD! He’s now my favourite so far! It was really interesting how it begins with the heroine and Ness already in a relationship and that the heroine was already aware that she’s in a school filled with undead corpses. Ness sounds like a cool and grey gentleman. It was really touching how the heroine told Ness that her heart belongs to him and him alone ❤️

I don’t think Ness exactly betrayed the heroine, it was more like Aron tricked him into betraying the heroine (at least he didn’t pull out the traitor card). I had to feel sorry for Ness getting tricked into destroying his kind side and the heroine who mentally broke because of his demonic side. Maybe Aron didn’t want his sister to be with Ness?

Aron is starting to get even more suspicious now, cause he didn’t even bother to go save his sister (who probably isn’t his sister at all!). But the truth will come to light when Aaron gets released. I’m really looking forward to his story now

Yes I enjoyed Ness’ CD a lot too! I was a bit worried when he said that they were already dating but it felt like there was actual chemistry between Ness and the heroine, unlike the others in the series so far. 😍

The situation with Aron is kind of interesting actually since near the end of the CD, Ness heavily implied that the reason Aron hadn’t returned to his room to help her was that she’d chosen Ness so Aron saw her as “used” (?) and left her to deal with the consequences of her actions or something. To be honest, I wasn’t sure if Ness was saying it just to be mean haha since it makes Aron out to be a bit of a spoiled brat 😯

I don’t know if you’ll agree with me, but I think Ness is the only undead corpse the heroine was truly and genuinely in-love with so far. Cause looking back at the earlier CDs of Corpse Heart, the heroine only agreed to “love” whichever guy in order to save her own skin, even if it means getting “caged” by them.

But why would Aron trick Ness into destroying his “kind” side? What did you mean when you said Aron saw his sister as “used”? And why do you think Aron might be a spoiled brat? His voice sample makes me want to believe that Aron won’t betray his sister which is highly unlikely cause they may not be twins at all!

I’m betting that Aron will pull out the “we’re not siblings” card in his drama CD if he truly isn’t twins with the heroine. But it’d be interesting if they were actually twins, though that’ll be incest considering it’s a romantic(?) drama series. I’m starting to get a bit crazy that they haven’t released Aron’s special voice samples on Twitter yet and it’s been three days but they haven’t reached the 1000 RT.

Btw, I noticed that the character drawing of Ness has shades, but on his drama CD cover, he doesn’t. I kind of wondered if he wears his shades to represent his kind side, but doesn’t wear his shades to represent his demonic side (cause of the shadow over his eyes on the CD cover)…

Hmm, while certainly Ness’ CD was the most romantic, it’s heavily implied in most of the releases that the heroine is in love with/ has feelings for the guys (but this is before they “turn” I guess?), with Qoo being the only exception since he never really had a confession scene?

I personally think that Aron deliberately tricked Ness because he was jealous/didn’t approve of his relationship with the heroine and I view this behaviour as something like a spoiled child being all “if I can’t have her, then neither can you”? Maybe “used” wasn’t the correct term but it’s heavily implied that Aron kinda leaves the heroine to deal with the consequences of choosing another guy over him, whereas one would assume an actual caring brother would try and help his sister especially since it’s meant to be ever so easy to track her due to her heartbeat. Maybe I’m looking too much into it though!😆

Ooh, I didn’t realise that they had special voices on Twitter! I don’t really use the site but hopefully Aron’s special will be up soon?
As much as I also want to believe that Aron will be a nice guy, we can’t really go by the voice samples since all of them have shown the guys’ nicer sides (it would be a spoiler to show their crueller sides!). I highly doubt they’re siblings but if any company would include incest, it’d probably be rejet since they’re so (in)famous for their older brother characters 😛

That’s an interesting theory about the glasses! I must admit that I just assumed he wore them to distance himself from others and wasn’t wearing them on the cover of the CD since he’s probably meant to be bearing his soul to the listener or something? I think I prefer your theory though 🙂

Apparently, Aron’s 1000 RT campaign on Twitter failed so they’re not going to post his special voice samples up. As for why Aron tricked Ness into destroying his ‘kind’ side, I think I think I’m going to go with your jealous theory. It kind of makes sense that Aron probably wanted his twin sister’s ‘Jewel Heart’ to achieve whatever goal he has, or to just have her for himself.

I kind of remembered that Aron’s soul vessel is an owl and I started imagining Aron using owls or maybe turning himself into an owl to spy on the heroine. And he got angry and jealous when he somehow found out that his sister was willing to give her heart to Ness which made him resent the both of them. Then maybe he decided to punish his sister by depriving her of her beloved for choosing Ness over him? Which is why he tricked Ness by giving him the wrong spell and didn’t help the heroine when she needed him most.

There was a detective drama I watched where a brother killed his younger sister as revenge for marrying a wealthy man and excluding him as her “first love” (because he did not approve of his sister’s marriage to that man and was angry and jealous that she went along with it). And the other reason why he killed her was in order to inherit her husband’s fortune.

Aron’s special voice samples were finally posted on Twitter!

They were so sweet! Cause the first sample was Aron helping the heroine catch up with him at school, as well as offering to make her favourite galette (French flat pancake which can be served either sweet or savoury). The second sample was just him telling her that she’s his important younger sister etc. and the third sample was him inviting the heroine to sleep with him after she had a nightmare.

I’m really looking forward to his CD now!

Oooh, thank you for letting me know, I had a creep through rejet’s twitter feed and all 3 of the special voices were so adorable?! I really hope he turns out to be nice~ The 2nd clip was interesting since he appears to be almost worried since it’s the heroine’s first Easter Fes and tells her that she’s free to ask him any questions, which would imply that he’s not directly trying to deceive her?
Anyway, Aron’s CD should finally ship to me tomorrow so I’m praying that it arrives at some point next week! 😀

Yes the cousins thing is a very interesting theory and would be something that rejet have done before (Dandevi) so does seem plausible. I must admit that I just hope they don’t go the reincarnation route (like the heroine is a reincarnation of Aron’s sister/lover or something) since it’s kind of lazy ha ha
The situation with Ness and Aron definitely sounds a bit like that drama although we’ve yet to find out wether he acts out of love for the heroine or for selfish reasons of simply removing competition for the Jewel Heart?

I really wish they did more with the spirit vessel thing because it’s never mentioned in the CDs, sadly. 😦 So I basically just see them as maybe descriptors for the characters like Owls are traditionally associated with knowledge/wisdom but are also a bad omen and can be known as harbingers of death? So maybe that’s not a good sign for Aron 😛

I think your “reincarnation” idea was a really good one! It would be really interesting if the heroine was actually a former lover of Aron who somehow died and Aron used black magic to ressurect her and turned her back into human after obtaining the “Jewel Heart” from a past victim. And he manipulated her memories to make her believe that she and him are twin brother and sister? Cause remember in Ku’s drama? Ku was created using black magic and it’d be no surprise if Aron was the one who created him. But if that were the case, then why did he turn the heroine back into a human?

Considering the other five corpses, I think the only ones who actually deceived the heroine was Valerie, Ku and Kirumi. Rizzi was “nice” enough to explain the Easter Festival to her, and even though Ness was initially one of the corpses after her heart, he changed his mind when he fell in love with her. And it was interesting that his story started off with him and the heroine already in a relationship. Do you think the “demon” Ness is still in love with her? And the only reason why Aron didn’t help his sister was because he was jealous that she chose Ness over him?

I can’t wait to learn the truth in Aron’s drama CD!

Hmm I suppose it would fit with the fact Aron’s a necromancer after all, it just seems kinda weird that if she had no memories to begin with that he chose to make her his younger sister rather than cousin, childhood friend, etc… I really want to know what exactly the Jewel Heart is and where it originates from – like the guys all imply that it’s her actual heart but is it something you’re born with, is it something that awakens due to a spell or can someone be given it via transplant or something (i.e. the plot of Dialovers )? I doubt we’ll get many answers in Aron’s CD though 😦

I would argue that Rizzi technically lies at the start by befriending her under false pretences/with an ulterior motive in mind but he lacks the length and severity of deception shown with Valerie & Kirumi particularly (for some reason I don’t consider Kuu’s deception to be quite as bad as those two? Possibly because he doesn’t bring any romance into it or something?). “Normal” Ness is a good boy but I don’t think “demon” Ness has any affection for the heroine – he simply wants a new toy to mess with. I do think jealousy is the primary reason but it seems strange for Aron to just abandon her if he spent years working on this plan? At least we won’t have long to wait to find out ^_^

I really hope everything will be revealed in Aron’s CD. In the other five series, the guys mentioning him just made me more interested in Aron’s character. I’m still confused about Kirumi being Aron and the heroine’s “father”. I’ll still bet that Kirumi’s corpse was another vessel used to ressurect the current chairman because the body of the chairman expired so in order to ressurect, he needed a new vessel.

I think Ness is my most favourite so far. His story sounds so romantic… well until the end of his drama when he got tricked by Aron. I hope to eventualy hear his character songs, both the musical and the undead versions. Were they good? My favourite song from Corpse Heart so far has to be Ku’s undead song “Яeplicant”. I’ve been recently crazy about Tosshi’s singing voice lately. I heard he’s going to be performing Duran’s song from the Re:Vival series, “SAYONARA” for the Rejet Focus 2018 event next week.

That aside, I’ve picked up on the Happy Sugar Darlin series and it’s just TOO cute??? I think I liked Enju, Minato and Riku so far (probably because of the seiyuus who voice them). Satou was really funny and it was interesting that he’s the older brother of the heroine (and their actually brother and sister???). I’m glad they didn’t make it incest, and just showed the bonds between siblings and family love.

Lol I keep trying to forget Kirumi’s “revelation” since it was so out of place. I’m just worried that my expectations for Aron’s CD is unreasonably high at this point. Here’s hoping we get a sequel to expand on the story!

Yes both of Ness’ songs were good (I love Ishikawa Kaito’s singing a lot though). Kuu’s songs are still my favourite overall but the samples for Aron’s sound really great! 🙂
Ooh I hope rejet put some of the concert videos up online since I don’t think they’re planning on releasing a DVD/Blu-Ray of their events anymore 🙁

Aaaaaaaaaaaaa I love the Happy Sugar series so much they’re my absolute favourite drama CDs! I own like all of them and can’t wait for the two last CDs in the current series. The series is so far removed from rejet’s usual style so I think that puts some people off listening to them. Which CDs have you listened to? My favourites are Tamaki, Ranran and Sora but all of the characters are so cute! ❤️
Yes Satou is absolutely hilarious, I love the stupid sound effects they use when he walks and he’s like the least threatening of rejet’s infamous “older brothers”.

Is it because of piracy issues that they’ve stopped filming Rejet Focus events? It might be broadcasted on NicoNico, so I might try and tune in on that. I’m probably going to watch the one on Sunday since Criminale! and Thanatos Night will be discussed. I’m also hoping for a sequel to Corpse Heart! There’s so many things that actually needs explaining.

I’ve listened to all the Happy Sugar Darlin CDs! I think I only ended up liking Enju, Minato (cause I like the childhood friend concept) and Riku. I actually read your review on Minato I he’s just really sweet! I just found Satou really amusing, especially when he’s voiced by Tatsuhisa Suzuki. No offence, but sometimes a bit TOO cute, like over-the-top cute can be a bit to cringey.

I think it was mentioned during their piracy rant earlier this year but it was more due to poor sales vs very expensive production costs.
I can’t remember which one they broadcast live but the concert parts for each day look so good! I’m pretty sure the website says that the new stuff will be announced in a section on the 1st morning (the 6th)? Hopefully they put the PVs up on their youtube channel promptly c:

Omg, can anything ever be “too cute”?! I see where you’re coming from though, there’s no way I could listen to all of the series in a row but they’re definitely fun to revisit every so often 😀 Have you listened to rejet’s “Lip on My Prince” series? It’s also super adorable but slightly less cutesy than Happy+Sugar.

I listened to the first volume of ‘Lip on my Prince’. It was an alright series I guess (no offence), cause of the typical romance between high school students. But I don’t think I’m keen to listen to the others unfortunately

The first day of the Rejet Event starts on January 6th (this Saturday). I’m going to try and tune into the one in the morning. I’m more interested in the one on January 7th (this Sunday) though, cause of Criminale! and Thanatos Night (which I’ll probably end up watching at 2:30 a.m in the morning on Monday (I don’t know)! >w<)

I'm really hoping for the continuaton of the series Criminale! Corpse Heart and Thanatos Night, and that Criminale! series be turned into a game. Cause the drama CD stories will definitely work out as game routes!

For the Rejet Focus 2018 event, Aron’s seiyuu is going to be performing live for Corpse Heart!

I was thinking about the titles of Aron’s songs, ‘Tattoo’ which is his musical version, and ‘T or F’ which is his undead (normal) version. Do you think ‘Tattoo’ is referring to the strange tattoo on the back of his left hand? And do you think ‘T or F’ means ‘True or False’? Someone said that the songs in Corpse Heart will give you a hint on how the character’s story will turn out…

I actually just got finished listening to/summarising Aron’s CD and can confirm that his tattoo is an important plot point. Yeah, “True or False” was what I was thinking too! The songs (in title and/or lyrics) do mention/hint at some things but the spoken lines in each song are very spoilery/give away important plot points. I was going to include the song lyrics in my summaries but I hate translating songs so much haha

Aron’s CD was okay – very, very short (like 20min max). It does answer some questions but leaves one really big question unanswered 😦

I know in a group tokuten, there has to be one or two characters who give the other guys in their harem nicknames. Is there any such person in Corpse Heart who does that? I bet Aron is all like “Stay away from my sister!” to the other corpses (if the heroine is featured). I remembered you said that the bonus tokuten was about the corpses looking for a magical flower that will turn them back into humans or something along the line?

How long is the tokuten? And I also remembered you said that you were going to merge it with Aron’s summary?

No nicknames yet (sadly) but that’s pretty much Aron. Qoo is surprisingly harsh to everyone and Rizzi actually seems to have some personality lol. They’re all very sassy/savage towards each other but that’s pretty much standard with rejet characters.
Yeah the story is that Valerie finds this book about a magic flower so gathers everyone to go on a quest but Aron is so dubious it’s hilarious. The others are 100% up for it though.

Tokuten is ~25mins long so it’s longer than the story part of Aron’s CD 😛
Yes, I’ll probably just combine the two together

Agreed, although I guess none of the Corpse Heart CDs had very happy endings?
It would be nice to see rejet pick up this series again though! ^_^
